West Nile virus confirmed in Ottawa

Again this year, the presence of the West Nile virus is confirmed in Ottawa. Mosquito traps and testing by Ottawa Public Health (OPH) found the virus for the first time this season.

Mosquitoes can pose a risk of infection from the virus until severe fall freezes.

This virus can be transmitted to humans. People who have it can experience flu-like symptoms.

No cases of human West Nile virus infection have been reported in Ottawa this year so far.

To reduce the risks, the authorities invite citizens to reduce the mosquito population near their homes by getting rid of all outdoor objects that may contain water and in which mosquitoes can lay their eggs.

In addition, it is suggested to protect yourself from mosquito bites by wearing covering clothes and using insect repellent.
