Rebecca Marino in the quarter-finals in Granby

Canadian Rebecca Marino advanced to the quarter-finals of the National Bank Championships in Granby on Wednesday with a three-set victory of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 over Italian Jasmine Paolini, 57th player in the world and 3rd seed tournament series.

Marino, who ranks 112th in the world, turned things around in spectacular fashion to cause an upset.

If she suffered the only break in the first set, the Canadian subsequently let her rival win her service game only three times. Marino converted four of her nine break points and saved two herself.

Paolini had reached the semi-finals of two of the last three tournaments she entered.

Marino now has a date with another top seed, Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk. The 10th seed defeated the Canadian Marina Stakusic not without difficulty in three sets of 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 and 6-1.

Two other Canadians were in singles action on Wednesday. Katherine Sebov suffered a heavy 6-1, 6-0 loss to Australia’s Daria Saville, while Cadence Brace lost to China’s Wang Xiyu in straight sets 7-6 (7/4) and 6- 1.

On the men’s side, two Canadians won their first round match. Gabriel Diallo defeated his compatriot Dan Martin in straight sets 7-5 and 6-1, then Justin Boulais beat Frenchman Clément Chidekh 7-6 (7/5) and 6-2.

The other Canadian in action, Liam Draxl, however, admitted defeat against Australian Jordan Thompson in two sets of 7-5 and 6-1.
