Montreal: a man arrested for car theft after an accident

Called to intervene in a minor accident on Sherbrooke Street in the Pointe-Aux-Trembles sector, Montreal police officers arrested a man for car theft on Friday morning.

It was around 3 a.m. that the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) was called to the scene of an accident that occurred on Sherbrooke Street, near 31e avenue, in Pointe-Aux-Trembles.

The vehicle would have collided with a park bench and a lamppost, said Jean-Pierre Brabant, spokesperson for the SPVM. However, when the authorities arrived, the driver had fled the scene.

“With the help of testimonies from people who attended the event, the police searched the area and located the driver, a 26-year-old man,” said agent Brabant.

Fortunately, he escaped with only minor injuries.

After an investigation of the vehicle involved in the accident, the police found that it had been declared stolen. Thus, the 26-year-old man was arrested and could face charges of car theft, receiving possession and hit and run.
